UNIVERSITY OF JAEN

SCHEDULE

Introduction to Philosophy: MTWR 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM     (M3)

Cross Cultural Philosophies: Islam, Judaism, and Christianity: MTWR 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM      (M5)

JAEN

The city of Jaén is located in the central-south part of Spain. It has a population of approximately 120,000 inhabitants. Its Arabic legacy is evident throughout the city. The Arabic baths in Jaén are the largest in all of Spain. Jaén's spectacular Cathedral was begun in 1570 and completed in 1802, and it is a wonderful example of breath-taking Renaissance architecture. Jaén is a vibrant city and there are always hundreds of people passing through the streets and enjoying numerous and beautifully decorated bars until late at night. Students will find that Jaén's size is conducive to learning about Spanish culture.

ANDALUSIA

Andalusia is one of seventeen autonomous communities of Spain located in the south of Spain. Andalusia is divided into eight regions: Huelva, Seville, Cádiz, Córdoba, Málaga, Jaén, Granada, and Almería. It is most touristic part of Spain, known for its Moorish legacy (711-1492), beaches (Costa del Sol), flamenco music and dancing, bull fighting and tapas.

GRANADA

Granada is located approximately one-hour drive south of Jaén. The city sits at the valley of Sierra Nevada, the largest mountain of Spain and second largest mountains of Europe (9,000 ft. above sea level) and one-hour away from the beautiful beaches of the south of Spain. In the winter you can ski in the morning and take a walk by the seashore in the afternoon. Granada has a rich Arabic tradition and was the city where Ibn al-Ahmar established the longest lasting Muslim dynasty on the Iberian peninsula.

CORDOBA

Córdoba is the birthplace of the great Roman philosopher Seneca. It is located 1.5 hours west of Jaén, and it has a population of 325,000 inhabitants. C'ordoba's history is incredibly rich. It was captured in 711 by the Muslims and by the 10th Century it was not the most populated city in all of Europe, with approximately 500,000 inhabitants, but also the most advanced and progressive in its culture and politics. It has one of the most extensive historical heritages in the world (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO December 17, 1984),
